President Donald Trump announced on February 28 that the United States had begun what he called “major combat operations” in Iran, launching a dramatic new phase of direct American military involvement.

In a video address, Trump said the operation was intended to defend Americans and eliminate what his administration described as imminent threats from the Iranian regime.

Trump said Iran’s nuclear and missile programs posed unacceptable dangers to the United States, American forces overseas and U.S. allies throughout the Middle East.

The announcement followed major U.S.-Israeli strikes against Iranian military and government targets, marking a significant escalation in the confrontation between Washington and Tehran.

The White House presented the campaign as a military effort designed to destroy Iran’s ability to threaten American interests and project military power beyond its borders.

Trump also directly appealed to the Iranian population, urging Iranians to take control of their government as American forces intensified operations.

The administration subsequently described Operation Epic Fury as an extensive campaign against Iranian missile, drone, naval and defense-industrial capabilities.

By March, the White House was claiming that thousands of Iranian targets had been struck and that Iran’s ability to launch missiles and drones had been substantially weakened.

The conflict, however, did not end after the initial campaign. Fighting continued through successive phases, including periods of intensified strikes and temporary pauses.

Trump later agreed to pauses in military operations while diplomatic efforts attempted to produce a broader settlement with Tehran.

In July, Trump formally notified Congress that hostilities against Iran had resumed after another breakdown in the ceasefire arrangement.

That notification became an important part of the growing dispute between the White House and Congress over presidential authority to conduct military operations without explicit congressional authorization.

Meanwhile, lawmakers increasingly questioned the duration and cost of the conflict, with bipartisan support emerging for measures designed to limit Trump’s war powers.

The political pressure has intensified as the conflict has continued to affect energy markets, U.S. military resources and America’s wider position across the Middle East.

Trump has repeatedly suggested that he wants an agreement with Iran but has simultaneously warned that Tehran could face devastating consequences if negotiations fail.

By early October, however, the situation remained unresolved. Recent reporting indicates that Trump was considering whether to resume major combat operations rather than having newly confirmed that they had already begun.

U.S. officials have reportedly prepared for the possibility of renewed large-scale attacks, while additional American air-defense systems have been positioned to protect key facilities in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Iran, meanwhile, has reportedly been preparing a stronger response if Washington launches another major campaign, potentially expanding attacks against U.S. interests and regional allies.

That leaves the region facing another dangerous crossroads, with diplomacy stalled and both sides preparing for the possibility that the fighting could escalate again
