class="entry-content">

Registered Republicans held a narrow turnout advantage in Florida as in-person early voting offset Democrats’ lead in returned mail ballots.

Figures reported Tuesday morning showed Republicans ahead by 12,766 participants across the two voting methods, based on the party totals.

That Republican edge emerged despite Democrats maintaining a substantial advantage among voters who had returned ballots through the mail.

The Florida Division of Elections reported 1,492,287 mail ballots and 1,660,398 in-person early votes as of 8:07 a.m. Tuesday.

Together, those figures represented 3,152,685 ballots cast or returned one week before the November 3 midterm elections.

The statewide figures showed more people participating through in-person early voting than through returned mail ballots at that reporting point.

In-person participation exceeded mail returns by 168,111, demonstrating the importance of examining both methods when assessing the turnout picture.

Among registered Republicans, 727,255 people had voted at early voting locations, compared with 601,289 registered Democrats.

That gave Republicans an in-person advantage of 125,966, calculated by subtracting the Democratic figure from the Republican total.

The GOP’s strength in that category was sufficient to overcome Democrats’ separate lead among voters returning mail ballots.

Democrats accounted for 643,143 returned mail ballots, compared with 529,943 from registered Republicans, according to the reported figures.

The difference gave Democrats a mail-ballot advantage of 113,200, a substantial lead within that particular voting method.

However, that Democratic margin was smaller than the Republican advantage in early voting locations, producing the combined Republican edge.

Adding both methods yielded 1,257,198 participants registered as Republicans and 1,244,432 registered as Democrats in the Tuesday snapshot.

Republicans represented approximately 39.9 percent of participation.

Those calculations describe participation by party registration, rather than votes awarded to Republican or Democratic candidates in any particular race.

A voter’s registration does not establish which candidates that person selected, and these turnout figures cannot determine an election winner.

The distinction is especially relevant when interpreting headlines focused on one party’s advantage within a single voting method.

Democrats led mail returns, Republicans led early in-person participation, and Republicans narrowly led when the two categories were combined.

Neither category alone provided a complete account of participation already recorded across Florida before Election Day.

Voters registered without a party affiliation also represented a sizable portion of the total, adding another important element.

Among those voters, 283,146 had returned mail ballots, while another 290,959 had participated through early voting locations.

Together, those figures accounted for 574,105 participants without a party affiliation across the two methods included in the report.

Their in-person total exceeded their mail-ballot total by 7,813, showing a relatively close split between the available categories.

The report did not identify their candidate preferences, meaning their participation could not be assigned to either major party.

Republican participants used in-person early voting more frequently than mail voting, based on the figures reported Tuesday.

The difference between those Republican categories was 197,312, reflecting the party’s considerably larger participation at early voting sites.

Democrats showed the reverse pattern, with returned mail ballots exceeding their in-person early participation by 41,854.

Those contrasting preferences help explain why a mail-only comparison produces a different picture from a combined turnout calculation.

The figures also showed that a substantial number of mailed ballots remained outstanding as the election approached.

According to the state, 986,535 people had not yet returned their mail ballots at the time of the report.

That number represented outstanding ballots, rather than proof that all those recipients would return them before the deadline.

It also left additional participation unrecorded in the returned-ballot totals, with the final number dependent on subsequent voter action.

The report stated that mail ballots must reach the local supervisor of elections office by 7 p.m. on Election Day, WFLA reported.

It identified mailing the ballot or delivering it in person as ways voters could return their completed ballots.

Registered Republicans held a narrow turnout advantage in
