The episode, he said, happened on a return flight from China. An unidentified person was stretched out on a couch in the plane’s conference room and barely seemed to move. “For a significant period of this flight, it was debatable whether this person had passed away or not,” Rubio said. He could not see the chest rise and fall and could not “establish a consistent breathing pattern.” He also did not want to shake the passenger awake, or discover that he was looking at a corpse.

That hesitation, he explained, lasted about 90 minutes. Officials asked one another whether they should intervene, whether they should call the onboard physician, and what they would even do if the worst had happened. Waking a living person would be awkward. “It’s embarrassing if you wake them up,” Rubio said, imagining the reply: “Oh, I was just sleeping.” The other possibility was far worse. “If they were dead, like what do you do? You have a dead body on the plane.” He added that he did not know the protocol for that situation.

What made the scene harder to dismiss was the setting. The lights were on. There was “a lot of noise.” The sleeper did not react to any of it. Rubio said the breathing, when it was visible at all, looked too shallow to trust. “You could see every now and then that there was like maybe a breath, but I don’t know how you sustain life at that pace of respiration.” Jeanette asked whether he kept watching. Rubio said he did, in part so that if the person had died he could later account for when he first noticed and what he had done.

No one summoned the doctor. No one tried to wake the passenger. The standoff ended on its own. “Luckily, the person was fine,” Rubio said. He never named the sleeper, and no other official has publicly identified them. That gap immediately produced jokes and guesses online. Some users floated Mitch McConnell. Others suggested Vice President J.D. Vance. None of those theories has been substantiated. Rubio offered no hint that would settle the question, and the exact date of the flight remains unconfirmed.

The anecdote drew extra attention because sleep had already become a political talking point around Rubio. About a month before the podcast, during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., asked whether Rubio had seen President Donald Trump fall asleep in more than one meeting. Rubio said he had not. “On the contrary, the guy doesn’t sleep, which is a big problem,” he said, noting early-morning calls from the president. Lieu then played video from a Cabinet meeting that he said showed Trump with his eyes closed while Rubio was speaking, and accused Rubio of lying to Congress. Rubio stood by his answer. No formal action followed that exchange.

Taken together, the two episodes show how quickly a nap on a government plane can become public business. On Air Force One, Rubio and his colleagues treated an unresponsive passenger as both a possible medical emergency and a potential social disaster, and they chose delay over either diagnosis. In Congress, sleep was used as a proxy for fitness and credibility. In the story Rubio told Miller, the mystery passenger simply woke up. The officials never had to invent a protocol for a dead body at altitude. Rubio now tells the story as comedy. The name of the sleeper, and the full list of people who sat through those 90 minutes of debate, are still missing.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has described a strange hour and a half aboard Air Force One in which he and other senior officials could not decide whether a motionless …

[1

post-4034","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
