Dean had grown up without a relationship with his biological father, and he was determined to give his own son something he never had: a father who would always be there.

After Christopher’s birth, Dean and the boy’s mother faced a difficult custody battle. In 2011, Cain was awarded sole custody, and he became the primary caregiver. He cooked his son’s meals, attended football games and jiu-jitsu tournaments, and worked hard to balance parenting with his career. “I’m a very present father,” he once said, making it clear that being there for his son mattered more than being on screen.

That commitment came with sacrifices. While fans wondered why Cain was turning down acting opportunities, he was choosing school events, family time and his son’s well-being instead. He continued working as a writer, producer, director and host, but his role as a dad came first. He even named Christopher after his adoptive father, Christopher Cain, who had stepped in and raised him after his biological father left.

Years later, the bond between Dean and Christopher remains incredibly close.
