WELLESLEY, MASSACHUSETTS \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0A Massachusetts mother accused of killing her two young children is facing two counts of murder as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the events that followed.<\/p>\n

Janette MacAusland, 49, is accused of killing her 7-year-old son, Kai, and 6-year-old daughter, Ella, at the family\u2019s Wellesley home in April. Authorities say MacAusland later traveled to Vermont, where she appeared at her aunt\u2019s home in a distressed condition and allegedly made statements admitting to the killings.<\/p>\n

According to court documents, MacAusland allegedly told a Vermont police officer, \u201cI strangled them and then tried to kill myself.\u201d She also reportedly told her aunt that she wanted the three of them to \u201cgo to God together,\u201d but that the plan had failed.<\/p>\n

Vermont authorities contacted police in Wellesley, who conducted a welfare check at the family residence. Officers found Kai and Ella dead inside the home, according to authorities.<\/p>\n

The case unfolded amid a contentious divorce and custody dispute between MacAusland and her husband, Samuel. Court records show the couple had been involved in legal proceedings concerning their children and the family home before the deaths.<\/p>\n

MacAusland\u2019s defense has focused heavily on her mental health and has asked prosecutors and the court to reconsider the charges. The latest reports indicate she remains held without bail, while her attorney has argued that the case warrants further consideration of her mental state.<\/p>\n

Any connection between the custody dispute and the alleged killings remains a matter for investigators and the courts. Likewise, allegations concerning MacAusland\u2019s mental health do not by themselves determine criminal responsibility. Her state of mind at the time of the alleged offenses will be evaluated through evidence and legal proceedings.<\/p>\n

MacAusland pleaded not guilty to two murder charges at her Massachusetts arraignment and remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.<\/p>\n
