A Romanian F-16 fighter jet shot down an unmanned maritime drone carrying explosives near a major offshore gas facility in the Black Sea on Thursday.<\/em><\/p>\n

The incident occurred August 20 when a commercial vessel spotted the suspicious craft drifting near the Neptun Alpha production platform, approximately 80 nautical miles east of Constan\u021ba within Romania\u2019s exclusive economic zone. The drone was detected several hundred meters from the facility, which houses hundreds of workers and represents critical energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The Response<\/h2>\n

Romanian authorities immediately mobilized a response after the Coast Guard reported the sighting to the Ministry of National Defence. An emergency command cell was established to assess the threat level and coordinate with senior government officials.<\/p>\n

Interim Defence Minister Radu Miru\u021b\u0103 said the situation \u201crequired urgent action,\u201d and after consultation with President Nicu\u0219or Dan, Romanian forces received authorization to neutralize the vessel. Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the target.<\/p>\n

One aircraft engaged the drone with cannon fire, damaging the vessel and reducing the immediate threat. However, the craft remained afloat and continued drifting, necessitating additional intervention.<\/p>\n

The Disposal Operation<\/h2>\n

A Romanian Coast Guard vessel deployed an explosive ordnance disposal team from the Naval Forces to the scene. Specialists located the damaged drone and confirmed it contained an explosive charge.<\/p>\n

The EOD team executed a controlled detonation to safely eliminate the remaining threat. Video footage released by the Defence Ministry documented both the fighter jet engagement and the subsequent disposal operation.<\/p>\n

The Investigation<\/h2>\n

Romanian officials launched an investigation to determine the drone\u2019s origin. Through a newly established direct communication channel, authorities contacted Ukraine and received confirmation that the vessel was not Ukrainian-operated.<\/p>\n

President Dan strongly condemned the incident and attributed responsibility to Russia, stating that such episodes highlight escalating security risks confronting Romania and other NATO allies positioned along the Black Sea.<\/p>\n
